Hi

I think that a basic metadata in the recordings is a must. Wave Agent software from Sound Devices is free and you can edit metadata. If you don't have protools, soundminer or any kind of editor this is the best alternative I know. There is another software from the Library of Congress of USA, but I don't remember the name, as I've never used it.

Wave Agent seems pretty limited with regards to metadata from what I can tell? It seems geared to including info from the film/video shoot by including Scene and Take info but not other basic stuff like Description (from what I can tell).

In terms of free software, the only other suggestion I have is BWF MetaEdit. Check it out at:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/bwfmetaedit/

It would mean everyone has to submit BWF files but some standardisation in that regard is probably a good thing. Maybe metadata required could be specified as "Description" field as a minimum, and perhaps the recordist/contributor name in the "IENG" (Engineer) field. Just an option.

Great call. I updated the file format requirement. It was always in my head to record as BWF/WAV and I just assumed everyone else would be doing so. Probably bad on my part to assume that. I also updated the meta-data requirement slightly. I will be looking at the metadata for the files and cleaning them up so it's somewhat consistent.

Thanks,

Mike

BWF MetaEdit was the other editor that I didn't remember, thank you!

I always edit with Soundminer, so I don't know the exact fields you can edit with other soft, but I have Wave Agent and just did a test with it. It have a "Notes" field. Pro Tools Workspace recognise it in the "File Comments" field, but in the Soundminer "Description" field appears with a strange code before the text I introduced in Wave Agent.
I still think it is good as a free alternative.

Now I have to learn to use Google Drive

Have we tested MetaEdit to see if its metadata is visible in a range of DAWs? I can do some tests with ProTools this weekend.

I'm so stoked about this project - I think the result is going to be amazing!!!
Based off the ultimate the success of this one.. we should continue to do more/different categories!

I would love to! One of the great things about this theme is it's something everyone has access too. We will need to keep that in mind for the next one. A good turnout has a lot to do with accessibility.
