[PROJECT HAS ENDED] The "Winter" Library

Post by MikeQuell » December 21st, 2014, 8:44 pm

The "Winter" Library

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: April 1st, 2015

If you will be contributing to the library please click "Yes" on the poll. This will help encourage others to join the project. The more contributors we have the stronger the library will be.

The goal of this library is to capture 3-5 minutes of sounds that embody the feeling of winter. This can be anything from a set of footsteps (walk and runs), snowball impacts, wind gusts, ambient beds, snow falling off of trees, wildlife unique to the season, downhill skiing sounds, etc. It's going to be a very diverse collection, but hopefully it leaves a lot of room for creativity and garners multiple submissions from each recordist.

Crowdsource Library Submission Process

Process:
Contributors will have until April 1st, 2015 to submit their recordings. After the files have been submitted, they will be QA'd. If they meet the requirements for the library the contributor will be notified. Notifications can sometimes take up to two or three weeks after a submission. Please be patient and monitor this forum for updates.

Format:
  • All files should be recorded at 96kHz, 24bit.
  • Files should be 2-5 minutes long. If you are recording something that doesn't have a very long lifespan, try and record multiple takes and variations to get as close to the requirement as possible.
  • Consider the content when choosing channel information. Ambiences should at least be recorded in stereo, but something like footsteps might be fine with a mono recording.
File Naming:
Because this library is so diverse, most files being submitted will probably go through a renaming process. Original and updated names will be documentation and distributed with the release of the library. Please use your best judgement when naming files. At a minimum, describe the action performed and where it occurred (country, state, region, etc.).

If numbering variations please start with a suffix padding of "0" (01, 02, 03).

Meta-Data:
Please submit a simple text document with any other useful information that doesn't fit in the filename. Meta-data embedding isn't required since a separate text document will be included with the recordings.

Submission:
Upload your file(s) to a Google Drive account and share them with audibleworlds [at] gmail [dot] com.

Once the file is confirmed I will copy it to a master folder and notify the submitter that it has been received. When the submission deadline has passed I will grant contributors access to the password protected library. From here you can sync files to your local computer. I recommend using Google’s local app that you can download to your PC/Mac/Linux.

Please make sure your submission email has your correct contact name. If not, please leave a note (in the email or uploaded folder) when sharing your uploaded file so I can keep track of who has shared what. On previous projects people would send me files with no contact information and I had to track down further information.

Legal:
A contributors submission and involvement in this project is a digital signature that they agree to not sell or repackage the contents of this collection for redistribution in any way. By downloading and contributing to the project, contributors agree to give up any artistic credit required for using the submitted source recording. Original recordings submitted for this collection/project are free to use in commercial and personal projects without permission and/or without providing a credit to any specific contributor for their recorded submission(s).

Files submitted should not be from any previously released library or libraries, nor have the intent to be packaged with one. The submitted recordings should be unique to the "Winter" library.

Hello Mike,

If recording is done using a mono microphone should I render the file into a stereo (i.e. dual mono) file instead of submitting the mono file?

Thanks.

Good question, Peter. I think some guidelines in that regard might need to be laid out. If someone is recording footsteps, maybe that's something better for a mono recording? I think the channel information can be flexible. I'll update the requirements for that in my original post. Thanks!

Hi, I'd love to participate in the program, but I can only record at 44,1/16 , am I shut out then? (well at least, it's stereo :) )

I can hardly wait to try out my new MKH416 which I've just gotten. The only gap I have is that not only we haven't had snow yet here but even the temperature is around 15C which has nothing to do with winter...but with global warming :)

Yes, we're still having warm sunny days in Chicago! I suspect it'll be winter sometime soon, but in the meantime I can work on other stuff.

I'm in, although it's going to be "winter" in the tropics if that's OK with everyone. Will hopefully get some great monsoon related content.

I got a bunch of snow footsteps, IRs, and bare tree branch movement over the holiday break. How are the recordings going for everyone else?

We only just got snow here about a week ago. I'm hoping to do some recording this weekend, though it's already back up to 40º and most everything is melting.
