Re: Using an iPad or tablet for sound design

I use my iPad for some of the work I do; specifically, I use Animoog, Samplewiz, Yamaha's TNR-1 (The Tenori-on app) and occasionally Filtatron. Most of those apps are used for composition, but I do use Samplewiz and Animoog for sound design. I'd love to hear what other folks are using.

Re: The Sound Design For Modern Automobiles

Cool stuff. I remember watching a piece about electric cars, which are pretty much silent. They were using mp3 players and speakers on the outside of the cars so that they wouldn't be a danger to pedestrians, and there were discussions about what the sound should be – a motor? Music? And should it b...

Re: Favorite Quotes From The Industry

Two of my favorites: "Lots of people are nostalgic for analog. I suspect they're people who never had to work with it." – Brian Eno This one was said in response to changes in the visual effects industry but it applies across the board: "Every time there is a new technology, there is a paranoid fact...

Re: The "World Ambience SFX Library"

re: the map. I will be in Prague, Frankfurt, Dublin and southwest Ireland early next year, so if this project goes that long I hope to be able to contribute ambiences from those places as well.

Re: Sound Redesign Feedback

Nice job, Andrew, especially with not using any library sounds. I liked the siren and the gun effects, and the atmospherics were pretty solid. I like the subtle metal creaks throughout. I found myself wanting the footsteps on the deck plating to be a bit more metallic, though they had a great weight...

Chicago Blackhawks sound design

Here's a piece I worked on at my day job recently. I did the location sound effects recording, chasing the Zambonis and workers around with a Sound Devices 722 and a Sennheiser 416 while they chopped up the ice. I also did the sound effects edit/design, adding crowd noise and goal horns to the game ...

Re: Half-speed playback

I use shift+space as a gag, when a writer directs VO talent to slow down a read I sometimes will play back the previous take at half-speed. It gets a laugh, and I do it seldom enough that hopefully it has not gotten old! :? On the serious side, I have also done half-speed recording, the same way Les...

Re: How often do you use headphones while recording?

It's an interesting approach, certainly. I have a couple of quibbles with what he says. I hope I don't come across like a jerk; that's not my intention. First, the hot air balloon guy may not have been helped by his headphones, but I'm pretty sure he still wouldn't have been aware of the overmodulat...
